Someone wants a bright, citrus infusion for the evening. They have a budget, they want to drink it cold as well as hot, and there are ingredients they would rather avoid. They have given the shop quite a lot to work with.
A useful reply would narrow the choice and explain why the remaining products fit. It might ask another question. It might admit that nothing in stock meets all the requirements. Pushing the nearest thing regardless would leave the customer doing the work again.
Our commercial aim is to sell more tea by getting that conversation right.
“At the end of the day, we're here to sell as much TEA as possible in the most friendly, responsible way,” Lee said in his September account of the project.
He uses the word “enrichification” for the direction: making a service more useful as it develops. In the shop, that means fuller product knowledge, clearer choices and less work between a question and an answer.
The detail is where a specialist can compete#
A smaller retailer may know a particular blend or packet extremely well. That knowledge becomes more valuable when a person can explain exactly what they want, and an assistant can ask the shop for the relevant facts.
Advertising can introduce a product. It cannot change its ingredients or make the wrong pack size fit the request. We want the quality of the match to matter more as shopping conversations become more detailed.
That is why TEAS makes its product knowledge available to software: the exact packet, the supporting sources, its images and the details still missing. An assistant has somewhere specific to look. The customer can open the product page and see what they are being offered.
A commercial suggestion can help too. A larger pack may be better value for someone who already likes the blend. Another tea may suit a different occasion. The explanation should make the choice easier and leave the original requirements intact.
We want this to be a reason to choose a specialist shop. The better a customer can explain what they want, the more useful detailed knowledge ought to become. TEAS is testing whether that can lead to more trade as agents take a greater role in helping people shop.
